The expansion work on the Termocandelaria thermal power generation plant, located in Cartagena, is progressing satisfactorily.
Miguel Lotero, Vice Minister of Energy, said that the Termocalendaria expansion is progressing at 68% and this project is expected to be completed in 2022, Valora Analitik reported.
The works consist of upgrading the existing gas turbines and the construction of the combined cycle closure, increasing capacity from 314MW to 566MW and reducing its energy production costs by 40%.
In addition, the plant will be able to meet 4% of the national energy demand and 16% of the Caribbean region. Currently, the plant serves 6% and 23%, respectively.
Construction of the project involves an investment of US$232M, generating 1,180 jobs.
Expansion work began in early 2020 and will be completed in 2022, converting this thermal plant into a highly efficient plant.
