Colombia's El Niño weather event has arrived, and the country enters the dry season with reservoir levels already running roughly 10 percentage points below where they should be. XM, the electricity market operator and ISA subsidiary, warned as of June 17 that under scenarios resembling the driest episodes in the historical record, aggregate reservoir levels could descend to approximately 30% of useful capacity by the time the phenomenon peaks – far below the 80%-plus level that XM considers the minimum adequate entry point into the dry season.
