MinEnergia guarantees energy supply

The Minister of Mines and Energy (MinEnergia), Diego Mesa, spoke about the technical problems in the Cusiana field, but sent a message of tranquility about energy supply.

Mesa said that the technical failure in this important field affected an Ecopetrol (NYSE: EC) valve in the Cusiana field, forcing a partial restriction of the supply of natural gas to different regions of the country, La Republica reported.

The expert clarified that the domestic gas service continued to arrive without any interruption; since those who were most affected were large industries.

Mesa clarified that this situation will not affect the country’s energy supply.

It is important to mention that Vanti and EPM decided to temporarily suspend the supply of natural gas for vehicular and industrial use (see our companion article).

“The latest report from Ecopetrol is that they are working on an alternative scheme that has allowed them to increase the volumes of gas injected into the system,” Mesa said.

He said that the ministry is developing permanent monitoring both with Ecopetrol and with all agents in the natural gas market.

Mesa concluded by saying that authorities are taking measures to guarantee the gas supply to households. He said that these events are not related to the earlier incident at the TGI pipeline.

Bottom-Line: Natural gas is one of the main inputs for the Thermal Generators, but the abundant rainfall the country has been suffering likely means there is sufficient electricity.

But it does help make the case for diversification of power generation and diversification of natural gas supply.
