Colombia's wholesale electricity market administrator XM has issued a formal alert warning that the country will need to significantly expand its thermal generation capacity ahead of the El Niño phenomenon now forecast to begin in September 2026, with reservoir levels currently running well short of the target required to enter the dry season safely.
